Eating Well On The Road

Whether it’s a business trip or vacation fun, a little discipline goes a long way when trying to eat healthy on the road.

The truth is that eating out can be a challenge whether it’s in your home city or while traveling. It is also true that oftentimes when we travel for vacation we want to explore the local culture of our destination through their food as well, which can be challenging if you are trying to maintain a healthy diet.

Between fast food stops, huge restaurant meals, and a general “I-can-eat-whatever” attitude, usually the result is the typical vacation pudge that lasts longer than you want. However, if you follow the below eating guidelines, you will be able to have a good time on the road while both enjoying the local food offerings and keeping a healthy eating regime:

Plan Ahead

Pack smart, and that includes food. Stock up on travel-friendly grub that’s nutrient-dense, non-perishable, and has sustaining calories. Beef jerky, dark chocolate chips, nuts, and individual peanut butter packets can all be good options, as well as the right protein/nutrition bars that offer a good balance of protein without being overloaded with carbs and sugars.

Know Your Destination

Make a list of possible healthy food options in the area you will be visiting. This will allow you to have readily-available meal options whenever you feel hungry, without needing to stop at the nearest fast food joint to satisfy your hunger.

If you are visiting Chicago you should note Square Roots Kitchen as an ideal lunch and dinner option for a quick and healthy meal. Whether you’re a carnivore or vega, our fully-customizable menu will provide salad, bowl and wrap options that are tasty, nutritious and healthy!

Explore Beyond the Main Course

When visiting a new restaurant it’s easy to get lost on the often-long main course sections of the menu, which can be filled with unhealthy options. While of course there are healthy main course options, you shouldn’t forget about the appetizer and side sections of the menu, which can include vegetable and smaller-portion protein options for you to enjoy

Be Careful About the Booze

Alcohol is your enemy when consumed in excess. While being on vacation can lead one to feel free to excessively indulge, consuming too much alcohol is not only bad for your body, but can lead to hangovers and can, subsequently, ruin your entire trip.

Scan the Buffet Before Choosing

If you’re facing a buffet option at your hotel make sure you fully scan all options before loading up your plate. Instead of succumbing to the temptation of the pastries you see first, hold off on choosing and head to the protein-packed items and vegetable section instead.

You Can Still Visit the Grocery Store While Traveling

In today’s day and age it’s likely that your hotel room may have a kitchenette, or that you’re staying in an airbnb or other type of apartment rental. Eating out is not only expensive and time consuming, but can also lead to unhealthy meal choices. It’s totally ok to buy groceries while on vacation or even during a business trip rather than always eating out.

Drink More Water

Always carry an empty glass or stainless steel water bottle with you and drink about 8 ounces of H20 every hour to prevent dehydration. Thirst often masquerades as hunger, and while on the move in a new city you will need to replenish your body’s water levels.
